If you employ someone or members of the public visit or use your premises, you should be PAT Testing. You need to be able to demonstrate that your appliances have been inspected regularly. Ultimately it is the Owner/Directors responsibility whether they carry out the testing themselves or not. So even if a third party is employed to carry out the work - the Owner/Director will need to understand every aspect of PAT Testing to make sure the contractor is meeting the obligation fully. You can read more about Contractor v D.I.Y. PAT Testing by clicking here.

You do not need to be an electrician or hold any qualification to carry out PAT Testing. You simply need to know what you are looking for. Our DVD is suitable for most people, but if you want the reassurance of attending a course, you can read more about attending a practical hands on course here

Determining the frequency of testing is one of the most important factors, when PAT Testing as the frequency is determined by the risk of the appliance, how and where it is used, who uses it as well as whether any other risk factors such as water are involved. This means that some appliances might need testing every six months, while others can be tested much less frequently.

Get to know your appliances and develop a frequency that suits you needs, you can do your own PAT Testing at a time that suits your business and using your own staff, giving you full control and minimising any disruption to your business, customers or residents.

You don't need to be an electrician to PAT Test. There is nothing to say that you have to attend a training course, the HSE (Health & Safety Executive) merely state that the testing must be carrried out by a competent person.

So how do you become competent? Well it boils down to having the necessary knowledge or skill to do something. For many people our instructional DVD is sufficient as it will take you through all steps of testing. If however, you are expecting your employees to carry out your company's PAT Testing, you may feel more confident knowing that you have sent them on a comprehensive course, that will ensure that they leave feeling confident and fully trained.

Our course includes:

  • Discounted PB500 (save 10% when buying the kit)

The IET Code of Practice for In-service Inspections and Testing of Electrical Equipment (4th Edition) states that "The accuracy of a test instrument be verified annually or in accrodance with the manufacturer's instructions."

"Such machine testing should be carried out by a formal calibration house, and the testing of the test leads should be assessed at the time of calibration."
